The team
Mariken Betsema
Mariken went to a school for business administration and economics before she took on a study in Business economics at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. She became particularly interested in spatial and environmental economics. Her thesis subject regarded the influence of environmental policy on technological developments in agriculture. Research always was her favourite study discipline. Before joining IMSA, she worked at an educational centre for environment and spatial planning.
'I work at IMSA since January 2006. I was attracted by the diversity and the scope of the projects as well as by IMSA's approach. It is an energetic, inspiring environment, which constantly challenges you to develop an alternative, daring view on issues. I am regularly informed about new or ongoing projects that have the capacity to flesh out the concept of sustainability. It always makes me feel that I want to be involved right away.
I am convinced that in-depth research and a systematic approach to environmental issues pays off on various levels. Which level is not always possible to predict; that is what makes it so interesting. People's consciousness needs to be raised, and it is our job to show the profit that is to be made. A rewarding task.
I work at IMSA as a researcher and consultant. I am involved in various projects, such as on Wetlands in the IJsselmeer and strategic sustainability management.'
