Wetlands in the IJsselmeer

Stichting Wetlands in het IJsselmeer (Wetlands in the IJsselmeer Lake Foundation) is  a collaboration between IMSA, ECORYS and Deltares. WL|Delft by way of Delft Cluster is also involved.
The foundation is working on a plan for the reorganization of the IJsselmeer lake area in which the strengthening of nature, landscape, water maintenance and dike safety is leading. Accordingly, economic activities such as recreation, living and transport are implemented within the green-blue framework. This framework is meant to be so robust that it will be able to manage the increasing pressure of the economic activities in the area in the future. For a long time, intervention in the IJsselmeer lake area seemed to be taboo. However, this intervention seems to be necessary in light of current developments such as the one-sided focus on housing construction and infrastructure in the northern wing of the Randstad, better insight in the deterioration of landscape values, the predicted consequences of climate change for water maintenance and increasing water levels, and the increase of human activity in the area.

Our poster summarises the information.

Marc Beets, former project leader Wetlands at IMSA:
Partly due to the efforts of IMSA and the other partners in the Wetlands Foundation, a clear sense of urgency in society has come about: something has to be done in the IJsselmeer lake area. IMSA maps information from the stakeholders: what is their opinion, for what problems are they looking for solutions, what are their plans for the area? We bundle this information and use it for the next step: politically directed deliberation. I think its a fantastic project. It is an enormous social challenge to come up with a good long-term vision that can serve as a framework for streamlining all of the planning for the area. This area is incredibly important for The Netherlands in so many ways.

Bart Witmond, Senior Consultant for ECORYS Nederland:
Ecorys is studying what the Wetlands plan means for prosperity. That means for the quality of life, but also for the economic function it could have, for example for housing construction. It is clear that the IJsselmeer lake area as it is creates problems, with respect to nature as well as to safety and to housing construction. If the Wetlands vision is the answer, remains to be seen. With respect to recreation this is quite certain, but further research is necessary with regard to housing construction. It is a fascinating project that could really change the Netherlands. What is important at the moment is that the discussion is conducted properly, which is why we work together with IMSA and the other participants to provide the correct information.
